We wanted to support a charity which was personally relevant to all members of the team. Cancer is an illness which has touched almost every member of society and it quickly became apparent that our team is no exception.
While this might not come as a particular shock to those reading, what we found surprising was the comparative lack of awareness of prostate cancer. We were talking over which charity to support right around the time of the breast cancer ‘selfie’ campaign – to us that really highlighted how successfully breast cancer has been brought into public discussion. In recent years breast cancer has received a substantial amount of media attention; conversely, prostate cancer seems to have been largely forgotten about. While the Movember campaigns of the last few years and the latest ‘Men United’ campaign have both helped to increase public awareness, prostate cancer is still under-supported. We would like this to change.
For every kilometre we cycle we want to raise £1 for Prostate Cancer UK – a total of £15,000 to help British men in their fight against prostate cancer. Over 40,000 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer every year, and over 250,000 men in the UK are currently living with the disease. In fact, it’s pretty rare to meet someone who has not had a personal family connection with prostate cancer. It is the most common cancer amongst men – and it is estimated that by 2030, it will be the most common of all cancers.
Please donate using the link below! This is a fantastic cause and your support will also keep us motivated through some of the tougher sections (i.e. when we’re freezing our prostates off in -30C in the Pamirs)!
